Twisted photovoltaics at terahertz frequencies from momentum shift current

چکیده

The bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) converts light into a coherent dc current at zero bias, through what is commonly known as the shift current. This has previously been attributed to displacement of electronic wave function center in real space, when sample excited by light. We reveal that materials like twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) with flatband dispersion are uniquely suited maximize BPVE because they lead an enhanced momentum unlike any mechanism. identify properties quantum geometry, which go beyond geometric tensor, and unrelated Berry charges, physical origin large we observe TBG. Our calculations show TBG band gap several meV exhibits giant range 0.2--1 THz, represents strongest reported so far this frequency two-dimensional material partially persists even room temperature. paper provides design principle for generation, applies broad heterostructures potential overcome so-called ``terahertz gap'' THz sensing.

Design principles for shift current photovoltaics

While the basic principles of conventional solar cells are well understood, little attention has gone towards maximizing the efficiency of photovoltaic devices based on shift currents. By analysing effective models, here we outline simple design principles for the optimization of shift currents for frequencies near the band gap. Our method allows us to express the band edge shift current in ter...

Stand-up magnetic metamaterials at terahertz frequencies.

We present a detailed study of non-planar or 'stand-up' split ring resonators operating at terahertz frequencies. Based on a facile multilayer electroplating fabrication, this technique can create large area split ring resonators on both rigid substrates and conformally compliant structures. In agreement with simulation results, the characterization of these metamaterials shows a strong respons...

Sub-10 nm Gate Length Graphene Transistors: Operating at Terahertz Frequencies with Current Saturation

Radio-frequency application of graphene transistors is attracting much recent attention due to the high carrier mobility of graphene. The measured intrinsic cut-off frequency (f(T)) of graphene transistor generally increases with the reduced gate length (L(gate)) till L(gate) = 40 nm, and the maximum measured f(T) has reached 300 GHz. Using ab initio quantum transport simulation, we reveal fo...
